Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- • Why does my HD900/5 randomly cut out or shut off completely during heavy bass hits, even though my battery voltage is fine?
Due to R.I.P.S. technology, the amp pulls more current if voltage sags. If your power or ground wires are too thin or oxidized, this current spike trips protection. Use true 4-AWG pure copper (OFC) wiring and upgrade vehicle ground straps.
- • The status LED on my amplifier is blinking red/green or is solid red. How can I tell what the error code means?
A solid red light indicates a short circuit or blown voice coil. Unplug the speaker blocks from the side of the amplifier and cycle power; if the light turns green, the amp is fine and the short is in your vehicle's speaker wiring.
- • Why does my HD900/5 get incredibly hot to the touch compared to other Class D amplifiers?
The amp packs massive power supplies into a very compact chassis, concentrating heat. Ensure it is mounted horizontally or vertically with cooling fins unobstructed, leaving 1 to 2 inches of breathing space around it.
- • I only connected one pair of RCA cables to the main inputs, but my subwoofer channel isn't outputting any sound. What did I do wrong?
This is a signal routing oversight. When using a single pair of RCAs, you must set the "Input Mode" switch to "2 Ch." and toggle the "Sub Input" switch to "Int." (Internal) to feed signal to the subwoofer channel.
- • Why am I hearing a noticeable "hissing" sound or high-pitched alternator whine through my tweeters even when the radio volume is zero?
This baseline hiss happens if the "Input Voltage" switch is set to "Low" while receiving a high-voltage signal, forcing gains too high. Flip it to "High" if your radio outputs over 2V, and route RCAs away from main power lines.
- • Can I wire my 4 door speakers to 2 ohms per channel and still run a 2-ohm subwoofer on the 5th channel?
Yes. The regulated power supply design allows the subwoofer channel to deliver a full 500W RMS into any load from 1.5 to 4 ohms, while channels 1-4 can safely drop to 1.5 ohms without dropping performance.
- • I tried bridging Channels 1+2 and 3+4 to make a high-power 3-channel setup, but the amplifier immediately clips. Why?
Bridging increases the minimum allowable impedance threshold. You must use speakers with a minimum of 3 ohms (ideally 4 ohms) when bridging. Running 2-ohm speakers in bridged mode overloads the output stage and causes clipping.
- • Where is the onboard fuse located on this amplifier? I think I accidentally popped it during my install.
The HD900/5 has no onboard physical fuses due to its compact design. It relies entirely on an external inline fuse. You must install a 60-Amp inline fuse block along the main 12V power wire within 18 inches of the battery.
- • Why does the optional HD-RLC bass knob seem to do nothing or adjust the volume too abruptly?
This is usually caused by using a standard telephone or data cable instead of the original JL Audio wire. The HD-RLC requires a proprietary pin configuration; generic cables scramble the connection and cause dead zones.
- • How do I properly adjust the tuning controls if they are buried face-down when the amp is mounted?
The crossovers, switches, and gain dials are hidden under a security cover on the top faceplate. Because access is limited once mounted under a seat or panel, always calibrate your tuning settings before screwing the amp down.

Excellent amp, good clean sound. Very happy so far. I have it in my 2009 370Z pushing Jl audio 12W6v2 sub and Boston Acoustic Pro60 se components.
Small and Powerful
-
It was between this and Alpine's PDX5. So glad I went with this JL! It's smaller and way more powerful than the PDX5. This fit easily under the passenger seat and my system looks so clean. A little pricey, but I dare you to find 5 channel amp this small yet this powerful!

I didn'tbuy the amp here, but this is the amp to get if you want the total package. This is a very powerful amp for the size. And very good for quality. I have it running a JL Audio 13tw5 and 2 sets of Pioneer 6.5" 4 ways in a 96' Tacoma regular cab. Everything is very loud and clear. I think the price increased here alil bit, but its worth it if you want 1 of the best.

I have this in my 2010 Subaru Legacy 2.5GT Limited, this thing is a beast. Well worth the money for all of the power in a compact size. King kong aint got nothing on this. :)

I've had many amps but this JL audio HD900/5 is awesome. This thing does not lack in power, plenty of it! The sound quality is top notch. I highly recommend this amp to anyone wanting a compact but powerful 5 channel amp. Got a great deal through Online Car stereo so that was a no brainer...

Great product!!! Haven't had one issue yet.

I absolutely love my JL HD900/5 amp. The clarity is amazing. The best part about this amp is you power your speakers and sub from one compact amp. I was able to do a very discreet and clean install because of the amps small size. The quick disconnects make the amp easy to tune and remove to work on the car. I also add the remote bass knob to the amp which allows you to adjust your bass level at the twist of a knob mounted right next to the head-unit. Tuning this amp is very straight forward thanks to its labeling and good instructions provided. I have had this in my car for around 2 years so far and have not had one problem. I am powering 10 speakers and 1 JLW6V2 off this amp. This will be my amp of choice for my future hot rod purchases because of its power and compact size. I have been a JL fan since I started getting into stereos in 2005 and continue to be because I have not had one issue with any of their products and appreciate there great customer support.
